Advertising With Oscar Mayer
Advertising has been used by companies for many years to inform consumers of the product or products they have to offer to the public. In the early days advertisements were most noticeable in newspapers and magazines. Through the years, technology made a number of advancements introducing many new ways to advertise. Although advertisements are still seen in newspapers and magazines they can also be found on the internet, television, and inserted into the packages of almost every item a person purchases or comes into contact with. It is hard to go anywhere or do anything without running into an advertisement. The structure of an advertisement is made up of several components; such as the age and gender of people, colors, words, and placement of each of these on a particular page. Companies use advertising skills to direct their advertisement to a particular audience that will be most likely to provide maximum earnings. An example of a company using advertisement doing to exactly this is Oscar Mayer’s. Oscar Mayer shows a great way to advertise their Deli Fresh turkey.
I was flipping through an Everyday with Rachael Ray magazine when I came across an advertisement for Oscar Mayer’s Deli Fresh turkey. This particular advertisement caught my attention for reasons that I was unaware of, so I decided to take a closer look. The package of turkey was placed in the center of the page in a setting that resembles a deli counter. A tag labeled with the words special and shaved is placed in front of the package putting emphases on the fact that the turkey is cut just the same as deli meat is cut. In large print, located at the bottom of the page, was the phrase “It tastes this deli fresh. But without the deli counter price.” Below that in smaller print were the words “Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved Meats are sliced, packed and sealed at the peak of freshness. And cost 25% less than leading brand of deli counter meats.” Combined, this image and wording made a persuasive advertisement.
Every day with Rachael Ray is a magazine with recipes and articles on food products that is bought mostly by woman. Oscar Mayer knows that their target audience is going to be woman who cook and do the grocery shopping for their household; therefore it appears that this advertisement is geared towards woman.
While creating this article Oscar Mayer had assumed that the target audience is a typical American who likes their food to be fast, easy, cheap, and still be high quality. The image and words that were used in this advertisement portray exactly that. Since society also desires to get the most out of their food, Oscar Mayer added to their advertisement by giving the consumer an additional page of information about spicing up your sandwich with new extras, fresh facts, and inviting your sandwich for dinner. They have placed their lettering in bold easy to read print representing how easy it would be to just grab this option as it is inviting. Using different styles of font and different colors of ink in their label they’re also trying to capture large audiences.
Every advertisement is classified by a particular technique. This Oscar Mayer advertisement uses the lifestyle technique. The lifestyle technique associates product with a particular style of living and way of doing things. This advertisement focuses on lifestyles that are busy; such as, mothers with children at home or working class mothers. It is carefully placed in the top center of the isle which would most likely be eye level to catch your attention as you stood face to face with the selection. In the upper left hand corner you’ll notice the large number 14 next to the bell. Oscar Mayer’s is wanting you to know that you will get the great taste you have always been able to get at the deli without the long wait of a deli line. Right now it is ready for the taking as it is quick, convenient, and available at your fingertips.
The whole purpose of this ad in the magazine is to capture your attention and to make a bold statement.
