Breyers All New Ice Cream
Breyers has released its new, all natural Smooth and Dreamy ice cream. As you can see in the first magazine ad they have nice green with white printing that says “SMOOTH and DREAMY, I long FOR THE moment THE FREEZER DOOR opens”. Then in bold green Printing, there is “a TASTE BUD” with what looks like two green mints leaves at the beginning and ending of the writing. Lower down on the picture, there is a Breyers ice cream carton which has a black lid; the carton is black from the top, then fades to a rich blue in the middle of the carton with white lettering reading “NEW Breyers Smooth and Dreamy”, then in green lettering “ALL NATURAL”, then turning to white lettering again “Extra Creamy ½ the Fat Strawberry Cheesecake.” It also states that “this is love”. There is a picture of a scoop of vanilla and strawberry swirl ice cream? In smaller print under the carton it says “New Breyers Smooth and Dreamy ½ THE fat. It’s all natural. “It’s extra creamy. And it’s entirely delicious.” In the second advertisement the layout of the page is the same except it says, “I count THE MINUTES UNTIL WE MEET THIS evening, MY delicious SCOOP OF HEAVEN, a TASTE BUD.” This carton has a scoop of chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips in it. On the edge of the ice cream there are what look like chunks of milk chocolate. The Carton states that the favor of this is Chocolate Chocolate Chip. Like the previous advertisement described above, this advertisement also states, in small lettering under the ice cream scoop, “New Breyers Smooth and Dreamy ½ THE fat. It’s all natural. It’s extra creamy. And it’s entirely delicious.” Even though these two advertisements are from the same company they are targeting two different types of consumers. These two Breyers ads have two different audiences. The chocolate chocolate chip one is targeted toward the more romantic side of us by its opening statement of “I count the minutes until we meet this evening;” it is also going after chocolate lovers with the flavor of Chocolate Chocolate Chip. The other ad is targeting the dreamer in us with its opening statement of “Smooth and Dreamy,” it may also be targeting the vanilla and fruit lovers. Both of these advertisements are geared toward the health conscious consumers, by stating that the ice cream has half the fat of other ice creams. Does this mean that they have half the calories, and carbohydrates? Just because it claims that it has less the fat doesn’t mean that it is better for you than other ice creams. Both of these advertisements came out of “Better Homes and Gardens” magazine. The vanilla strawberry cheese cake was in the May 2009 issue and the chocolate chocolate chip was in the June 2009 issue. The ads came out right before spring and summer when ice cream is more popular. Who doesn’t like ice cream in the spring and summer more than in the cold winter months. This magazine is read by women of all ages ranging from the early twenties to women in their seventies. The magazine contains articles for women with interests such as do-it-yourself projects, gardening, and cooking, just to name a few. So, while you are looking at new and different recipes in the magazine, you might come across the ad for ice cream and think, what better dessert is there than a nice bowl of right out of the freezer cold ice cream? Or maybe you are looking at the magazine after dinner and before bed, and you run across the ad, where it strikes you that ice cream would be a cool and refreshing treat right before you retire for the night. These ads are also for the mother in you; what child doesn’t like to have an ice cream cone in the middle of the day? Both of these advertisements lead us to believe that because they have half the calories of non-lowfat varieties, it is a good and healthy snack or dessert. What it isn’t telling you is that it still might be high in calories or carbohydrates, which aren’t good for you. Granted, this ice cream might have fewer calories and carbohydrates than regular ice cream, but food high in calories and carbohydrates, if not watched can be a hazard to your health and should be eaten in moderation. As a society, advertisers pander to our basic desires by trying to convince us to buy more products with the allusion that it will make you happy. If you eat their product you will be more fulfilled.
