Reading's Many BenefitsThis is a featured page

During this time and age, many people can’t experience the countless benefits of reading profitable material. Reading has countless benefits that is available to any person who can just get a hold of a good book. Instead, the average kid goes to school, and comes home to watch their favorite television show. They are either too lazy, or they lack the motivation to start reading. I, for one, was once one of those kids. I would watch my favorite show while my siblings would be reading, and I lacked the motivation to read a good book. When I was twelve years old, I remember my siblings always reading. They often encouraged me to also start reading, by recommending books they thought I’d enjoy. But I wasn’t interested. A year or so went by, and still I lacked the motivation to start reading, but that was all about to change. It was a Monday afternoon and I just got home from school. My teacher from my writing class had just told me I needed help with my writing. My dad greeted me in the living room. “Hi honey, how was school today?” “My teacher told me I needed to do more work in my writing.” I answered. “Well honey, you know how much reading has helped your siblings in their writing, maybe you should try it.” “Yeah, okay.” I answered. But I wasn’t totally convinced. The next day at school my teacher came to me to talk with me about my writing. “So how’s it coming with your writing?” she asked. “Okay.” I answered. “Do you have any plans on improving your writing skills?” I then told her about what my dad had said to me. The next thing she said caught me off guard. “Rebekah, I’ve noticed that you don’t enjoy reading very much. So I thought of a proposition for you to consider. I want you to start reading any book, and at the end of this month if your writing doesn’t improve by then, well….we’ll think about that when the time comes.” Then she got up and left. I was hesitant, at first, about the idea, but I gradually warmed myself up to it. I remember what happened next as if it was only yesterday. I couldn’t stop reading, and after I would finish one book, I would ask my siblings for other book recommendations they thought I might enjoy. They were happy for me, but not only they, but also my teacher. At the end of the month, I was well on my way to greatly improving my skills in writing. Up to this day, I have found much pleasure in reading: romance, historical fiction, mystery, and drama genres, mostly. Today, I encourage my younger siblings to do the same, and read good books they enjoy. Reading has benefited me in many ways: one of the ways is how I use grammar. While I’m reading, if I come across a new word I don’t know, my mind automatically says it aloud in my brain. I look these new words up in my dictionary. My brain memorizes how words are structured together. When I have difficultly spelling one word, I write it down so that my brain can perceive it from how I saw it written before. There are many distractions that can hinder us from reading. The Internet has made research much more convenient, saving a trip to the library, where we search shelves and thumb through pages. Web sites can be a positive resource, but it shouldn’t replace the community’s public library. Another hindrance to reading, is the lack of interest to simply begin reading. In that case, you could start by reading a book that you think you might enjoy, by asking yourself what entertains you. When a new movie, based on a book, comes out in theaters, and you’re planning on watching it, consider reading the book first. You might find yourself surprised at how much you enjoyed reading the book, before watching the movie. Television has become a major distraction for young children, creating reading problems because the 3rd grader can’t concentrate on a book unless entertained. Instead of reading “The Notebook” or “Pride & Prejudice”, we have the choice of renting the movie on Friday night. I overhear friends complain about the old English writing styles in classics by Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, and Frances Hodgson Burnett. Personally, I enjoy the rich and unique substance this adds to the story line. A good author is one that transports the reader to the setting’s era in time, by using descriptive words that engage the senses. Reading is the first step to many important areas essential for a successful life. It allows the reader to learn different viewpoints, and have an opportunity to judge ideas equally from the writer’s own thoughts. Ardent readers can experience a broad spectrum of writing styles, forms, subject matters, ideas, and issues. It’s worth the effort to become a good reader. There are many barriers, distractions, and discouraging disabilities, but never let them stop you. For me, it was just lacking the motivation to start reading. So the next time you find yourself getting tired of reading, remember all the benefits that will help you lead a more successful, and knowledgeable life.
